The opposite of elitism is democracy.
Perhaps in some theoretical world, but in reality, not at all. Our democracy is in fact ruled by elites, above all by economic elites who easily manipulate public opinion to achieve their desired ends. Recently it was reported that the average American worker’s salary has risen by 5.4 percent since 1978, while CEOs’ compensation in that time grew by 875 percent. And whatever this wealthy group wants, it buys, simply by using the media (or, longer-term, the education establishment) to shape the mindset of the electorate. As a result, the profiteers are not simply tolerated but openly celebrated. After all, even Wal-Mart is standing up against America’s most pressing social problem: Paula Deen.
