Pétéris Vasks: Dona Nobis Pacem
May 5, 2012
Most people today no longer possess beliefs, love and ideals. The spiritual dimension has been lost. My intention is to provide food for the soul and this is what I preach in my works. (Latvian composer Peteris Vasks)
This a a performance by the Choeur et orchestre de chambre Estonien, directed by Paul Hillier

You would probably like Rautavaara’a Symphonies too. there are some on Youtube
I do like them very much. Actually, I own the whole cycle on Ondine.
Good guess on my part! You might also like Blomdahl’s “Space Opera” Aniara. Alos, sort of vaguely in the same vibe, I like Martinu a lot. Though his music all sort of sounds the same, I enjoy it. Martinu’s Piano concertos and Symphonies probably up your alley too. Cheers!
Peter Paul,
Right you are with Martinu! But I am not at all familiar with Blomdahl. Thank you for the recommendation; I’ll check it out. I love exploring the works and composers well beyond the basic repertoire.
Mark,
Glad I am not the only one with the Martinu guilty pleasure. I really like Claus Peter Flor’s recordings of Symphonies 1, 2, 5 & 6….if you don’t already have them They never did 3 and 4 unfortunately, or at least I have never seen them. But I have to say that my favorite Martinu record of all time is the 4th Symphony with Martin Turnovsky on a Supraphon lp. And, btw, sort of in the same vibe were Akeo Watanabe’s famous old recordings of the Sibelius Symphonies with the Japan Philharmonic. I would call it playing music in the sub specie aeternitatis vibe. Current conductors who favor that vibe are Inkinen and Yuasa, and come to think of it, Yuasa’s recording of that famous Japanese composer whose name escapes me would definitely fit your aesthetic I think. Glad serious music has people of taste to appreciate it!
ps. If you like Richard Nanes please don’t tell me! LOL
Peter Paul,
I became initially familiar with the Martinu symphonies through the Bryden Thomson set on Chandos and the Neeme Jarvi set on BIS (now on Brilliant Classics), both of which I enjoy immensely. I eventually added the Flor 5 & 6 (which I really like, as you do), but never came across the 1 & 2. And I do not believe that any other symphonies were released under Flor.
It sounds like you and I both– at least one phase of our live– spent a large portion of our expendable incomes on classical LPs and/or CDs, buying even multiple interpretations of many of the more peripheral pieces in the repertoire! I do not regret it one bit.
Mark,
I agree, there is nothing better than getting great music exactly as one likes to hear it down to the particular interpretation. If you are not a member or concertarchive you should be, as there is an incredible amount of free music there. I am also a very grateful member of OperaShare, but that is closed now, but you can get in by doing VIP obeisance of some sort. I have gotten so much great free music on those yahoo groups that it is incredible.
I have spent a lot of time in thrift shops looking for music. God is no respecter of persons!
