F-ing Tennis Shoes?

I went shopping today, I went to church in other words.
Yesterday, my post (arguing that D. Trump is the president who forces us to face our present, national reality—and a reality we deserve) was met by some outrage on several accounts.
One of them was this: my profanity-laced jeremiad against shopping and the USA went too far.
Here is some recent news to the contrary:

This is who we are. This is our religion. The great shopping nation. The greatest consumers of all time.
Thank God that, in these waning moments of Advent, our great season of Hope, Aslan is the move! Thank God that we do not get what—indeed Who—we deserve!
Come Lord Jesus, come quickly! Rejoice, rejoice, oh Israel…

Sam, I think you’re making points that VN’s audience is still getting accustomed to hearing. Points that touch the most uncomfortable of truths (as I type on my half a ‘$k’ computer). What you said was not inaccurate – nor was it uncalled for. To Consumerism! Cheers!

Sam, years ago, Sports Illustrated (I think) did a long piece on a former St. John’s University assistant soccer coach who was fired because he refused to wear Nike gear on the sideline at St. John’s games. He argued that the largest Catholic university in the U.S. should have no connection to Nike. He was a former top St. John’s player who had spent time in Indonesia at a Nike factory as part of his studies at St. John’s.
