An old, short poem…
July 6, 2011

Here is a little poem I wrote awhile back, on the trivial and profound aspects of rhetoric and language:
Rhetoric
Words come cheap.
Speeches come cheaper.
When they make you weep,
they become something deeper.

I had a therapist a while back who had some really sharp wisdom, hard-earned no doubt through years of working with people with problems. He said he did not try to understand people’s problems or their dysfunction, as if it had some deep meaning. Rather he waited till they said something that sounded mentally together and coherent, and then strongly supported whatever that was. Building on a strength. That is always the way to go.
