According to this article, things may get dire indeed:

If the reactor core became exposed to the external environment, officials would likely began pouring cement and sand over the entire facility, as was done at the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear accident in the Ukraine, Peter Bradford, a former commissioner of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, said in a briefing for reporters.

At that point, Bradford added, “many first responders would die.”

There is one mundane practical lesson we can take from this: we never know the hour in which disaster will strike. And for this reason, you and your family should have an emergency kit and some plans for what to do if a disaster should strike. These are really context specific—people in Iowa do not need to worry about tsunamis—but some general principles apply. Your local Red Cross and your state office of emergency preparedness can provide useful checklists of what to prepare.

God, in your mercy cherish the souls of those killed and bring comfort and strength to their families.
