Theophany Prayers

January 6, 2011

I found this great video in honor of the Theophany from the Dormition of the Theotokos Orthodox Church, Norfolk, VA.

Christ is Baptized! In The Jordan!

That most of the Western Church transfers Epiphany to Sunday is a scandal.

Epiphany is not Theophany, however. And well, calendars are made for man, not man for calendar. The problem, I think, is modernity which makes it difficult. I think the best way to deal with it is not changing of days, but more dispensation for needs, with more encouragement of people to come but less demands for weekday feasts…

The Church does not transfer Epiphany to Sunday, capitalism does.

Epiphany is a holyday, not a workday. Where capitalism refuses to recognize the holy character of this day, the Church is forced to have the liturgical celebration on the nearest day that is a holy (Sunday) rather than a workday.

Kurt, you are right as to a major part of the cause, and also why I think the Eastern model for obligations would work better. Nonetheless, it is not the only way the Church can respond to the problems of modernity, and you are right, the Church is trying to deal with it by the way the obligation is transferred.
