Don’t Be a Sucker! is an anti-racist propaganda film produced by the US War Department in 1947. An American who has been listening to a racist rabble-rouser is warned off by a naturalized Hungarian immigrant, who explains to him how racist demagogy allowed the Nazis to rise to power in Germany, and warns Americans not to fall for similar demagogy propagated by American racists.
The film was made to make the case for the desegregation of the United States armed forces. Due to fears that the film would be offensive to white Southerners,[citation needed] the film was not intended initially to be broadcast to the general public.
“When human groups divide and become fragmented, during a period of malaise and conflicts, they may come to a point where they are reconciled again at the expense of a victim. Observers nowadays realize without difficulty, unless they belong to the persecuting group, that this victim is not really responsible for what he or she is accused of doing. The accusing group, however, views the victim as guilty, by virtue of a contagion similar to what we find in scapegoat rituals. The members of this group accuse their ‘scapegoat’ with great fervor and sincerity. More often than not some incident, whether fantastic or trivial, has triggered a wave of opinion against this victim, a mild version of mimetic snowballing and the victim mechanism.” – Rene Girard, from “I See Satan Fall Like Lightning”
Also from wikipedia: “In 1988, Congress passed and President Ronald Reagan signed legislation which apologized for the internment on behalf of the U.S. government. The legislation stated that government actions were based on “race prejudice, war hysteria, and a failure of political leadership”. Over $1.6 billion in reparations were later disbursed by the U.S. government to Japanese Americans who had either suffered internment or were heirs of those who had suffered internment.”
I am most concerned and troubled by what I see as a recent surge of bigotry towards American Muslims as well as renewed expressions of racism in our society, often directed against the President.
In the present day, I beleive there is a very serious need to stand for tolerance and for the anti-fascist values expressed in the film above against a growing right-wing movement that is willing to do anything to push its agenda.
Having said that, we must also be aware that intolerance can come from the Left as well.
The internment of the Japanese was much more a sin of the Left than of the conservatives. It was motivated more by an overly hysterical anti-fascism than by racism. The first and strongest calls for their internment came from the Chinese-American community and was followed by those political elements most opposed to the Axis powers. It was condoned by the National Lawyers Guild, the ACLU and the Communist Party. Of course, it was FDR who ordered it.
To their credit, the internment was opposed by Senator Taft and FBI Director Hoover, as well as by conservative isolationists.
Seriously though, we should give Pres. Reagan credit and hold him up as an example to the current Republican party on this issue. I was no fan of his domestic or foreign policy, but he did seem to be more fair than most on racial tolerance.
“Inception”, an anti-war film? That’s a pretty funny joke. But seriously, I was wondering if any contributors had seen this video: http://www.xtranormal.com/watch/6987327/
“Somebody’s going to get something out of it, and it isn’t going to be you.”
“True Americans, it is time for you to inherit the nation that belongs to you… Who is getting these things now? The MEXICANS! The MEXICAN who has stolen our nation and our birthright. Who makes all the money and takes all our jobs. The MEXICAN! He must be shunned, etc.”
Yeah, certain pundits wrap their anti-immigrant talk around issues of liberty, freedom from government, and the Constitution. But I don’t think anyone is fooled by it. Then enter the eugenics argument with the pseudo-science of people like Steve Sailer who say that “Meso-Americans” (never met one in my life) have a lower IQ on average than “Americans” (whoever they are) and attack those who critique their pseudo-science as not being “objective”.
Bad economy. Check.
Hatred for foreigners. Check.
Love of “family values” Check.
Pseudo-science to back up their claims. Check.
Bellicose language. Check.
Mass movement in the streets. Getting there.
It’s not that I am saying that fascism will ever come to this country. But if it does, it will be the future fascists who will be the last to realize it.
This is quite a powerful video. The diferences is that today’s Palinistas speak in dog whistles, not the language of overt racism or discrimination, but the source is the same. I have major problems with Reagan winking at the still-powerful racist elements in the south, and regard Bush 2 as among the worst presidents in history, but both were infinitely superior on this matter than the current Palin/Fox News/Tea Party Republican party.
Arturo, the founders of this blog thought it would be a good idea to include a Steve Sailor type who believed in the relationship between race and intellect. It was an absolute disaster.
You know, it is really uncanny how this guy sounds exactly like the people protesting the ground zero mosque.
It’s from a WWII film, “Don’t be a sucker.”

That Reagan, always apologizing for America.
“That Reagan, always apologizing for America.”
Yes. It’s disgraceful, nothing short of appeasement!
Did anyone see Inception? It was wicked awesome. It was basically an anti-war film; the references were everywhere.

…..it will be “wrapped in a flag and carrying a cross”.
I picture it looking something like Michael Voris ;)
