To show how much the Republican party has degenerated in so short a time…

August 9, 2010

..I quote George W. Bush with approval:

“The face of terror is not the true faith of Islam. That’s not what Islam is all about. Islam is peace. These terrorists don’t represent peace. They represent evil and war. When we think of Islam we think of a faith that brings comfort to a billion people around the world. Billions of people find comfort and solace and peace. And that’s made brothers and sisters out of every race — out of every race. America counts millions of Muslims amongst our citizens, and Muslims make an incredibly valuable contribution to our country. Muslims are doctors, lawyers, law professors, members of the military, entrepreneurs, shopkeepers, moms and dads. And they need to be treated with respect.”

I wouldn’t say that the Republican Party as a whole opposes the construction of Islamic sites on U.S. soil, though prominent voices in the party and Republican candidates for office have made it a political issue.

Anyone aware of any high profile Republicans who have opposed this opposition, so to speak? Would be nice if George W. Bush would do so explicitly.

Ironically these remarks were made in 2001. This was his administration’s approach to Islam for all 8 years, which angered some of the righty yahoos who wanted to Nuke Mecca Now. At the time he didn’t get much credit from the lefties who are now so stunned by it, indicating they did not open a newspaper from 2001-2008.

Why are you indicating this is a “surprise”? The surprise is not his statement, but the degeneration after.

Of course, Bush said that because he is and always was a liberal, espousing the same viewpoints as JFK and Wilson and FDR.

Do you even *know* anything about Islam? Have you studied the history of Islam or the life of Mohammed?
Acts *by* Christians are used to condemn Christianity, but Jesus never conquered anyone, and Christianity, when it spread effectively, has always done so by peaceful means.

Mohammed was as great a general as Caesar or Alexander, and he conquered most of the Middle East, and he spread Islam by oppression, and his successors picked up that mantle.

Henry, unfortunately I don’t think the degeneration afterward is much of a surprise at all to anyone who is the least bit familiar with the general trajectory of the GOP :( Which is pretty much down, down, and down.
