Our newest voice: Nathan O’Halloran, SJ

March 10, 2010

I am very pleased to introduce our newest addition to Vox Nova: Nathan O’Halloran, SJ.

I have known Nathan since we were classmates at Franciscan University of Steubenville. He bested me in just about everything: academics; athletics; and being Catholic. He was an exemplary student; a standout rugby-player; founder of the campus publication, The Gadfly; and a spiritual leader in campus worship, evangelization, and missionary outreach.

After being out of touch for several years, we met again at our alma mater in 2008, at the Conference on Christian Philosophy: The Philosophy of Jean-Luc Marion, where he gave a rich paper on Jean-Luc Marion and Luce Irigaray that I still refer-to to this day.

Nathan comes from a missionary family working between El Paso, Texas and Juarez, Mexico. As a Jesuit, he continues his solidarity with the poor through the vows of his vocation. He currently teaches Homeric Greek, Scripture, and Theology at Jesuit High School in New Orleans.

I consider Nathan to be more than an accomplished young man of brilliant intellect and kind heart—he is a personal role model to me.

So, naturally, I am thrilled that he will be joining us at Vox Nova. He should be an original and timely voice that might help us all on our shared paths of conversion. His interests are broad, and his life models his words.

To read some of his previous work, you can find him blogging at Whosoever Desires. Welcome to Vox Nova, Nathan!

I graduated from Jesuit High School in New Orleans . . .

I graduated from a Christian Brothers high school, whose major rival school was the local Jesuit school. Since the Jesuit school was an elite high school that drew students from the areas of all the other Catholic high schools in the city, it was actually the major rival of all the Catholic high schools. The Christian Brothers told the old joke (I am sure adapted by every religious order) that a Christian Brother and a Jesuit were arguing about which order God loved the most, so they wrote God a letter asking him. The response was

I love every religious order equally.
    Yours truly,
    God, F.S.C.

    Welcome, Nathan O’Halloran, SJ.

    Welcome indeed, Nathan.

We are still looking over and considering others. If anyone is interested and has not e-mailed us, let us know. For those who have, it’s a slow process, and we still beg your patience!

Welcome, Nathan. I’ve enjoyed your writing at Whomsoever Desires.

(Goodness, we Steubies do seem to have a disproportionate presence in the Catholic blogsphere. Though now I feel old as the rugby club didn’t get going till the year after I graduated. Did you do classics at Steubenville? It was one of my great regrets I couldn’t get Almeida to offer Greek Epic and Lyric while I was there.)

Ha! It’s true, R, I typed Whosoever, looked at the post, and corrected it. Like the heffalump, I am caught.
