Note to the Media

There was an earthquake in a country in South America.  The anglicized pronunciation sounds like the spice chili.  The Spanish proununciation is Ch-ee’-lay.  Chill-lay’ is the pronunciation used by many people in the media and the faux-sophisticated.

Well not really. It would be more like: Chee-le (using the French sensibility on “le”). “Lay” drives me nuts too. Good point though.

I believe this is what’s called ‘majoring in the minors’.

I’ll bet Chris Matthews pronounces it “CHEE-lee.”

Try this link and click on the arrow for the first speaker. It’s a guy from Chile saying Chile.

Pronunciation? Ha! In the prayers of the faithful at my parish this weekend it was written that we pray for those in Chili.
