Love abounds.

January 12, 2010

Where is love? What place does it occupy? How much space does it fill?

When is love? When is it around? At what times does it present itself?

Who is loved? Who is worthy of it? Who can suffer it? Who does it favor? Who loves in return?

Why is love? What it is rationale? What is its logic? Why is it itself?

How is love? What are its aspects? How do we know it as itself? How does it come to be what it is? How can we be sure?

Catholics believe in the three theological virtues–Faith, Hope, and above all these is Charity. They are called theological because they all are directed toward God. Faith that there is a God. Hope that we may be eternally with Him. Charity is the act of showing we love God. Too often love is used instead of the word charity. Love is an emotion that sometimes has no reason for it; it just feels good. Sam, try using Charity instead of love in your message. You may then answer all your own concerns.

Thanks for that, Frank. I think you misunderstood the nature and purpose of the post. It is meant as a reflection and, perhaps, a meditation on love. And love has a storied and rich tradition of usage and meaning in the Catholic Church. None greater that the passage that Colin quotes. In that we find that these questions are eternal mysteries that make us, as Augustine put it, restless for the Love that is God.
