Vox Nova at the Rock Concert: U2, Moment of Surrender (Live from the Rose Bowl)

November 12, 2009

The song is from the critically acclaimed–but massively underperforming by U2 standards (it’s only gone platinum once thus far)– album No Line On The Horizon.

It has been used as the closer of every concert to date of their current 360 tour.

There’s not much point arguing its obvious spirituality and Christian sensibility.

Mark: I agree that Christians will find much that’s
familiar in this song. However, I think we need to be
very careful about identifying and claiming “Christian”
sensibility or spirituality, whenever some piece of work
has familiar elements. In the lyrics, the reference to
“stations of the cross” is the only element I can find which
is distinctly Christian. Other elements, which
are indeed familiar, could as easily be understood as
    belonging to other traditions.
When we say “this is Christian” it is easy to slip into triumphalism.
