Is this where we will be heading?
November 10, 2009
So it already appears that it was not for nothing that General George Casey warned against an anti-Muslim backlash in the wake of the Fort Hood massacre.
From the St. Petersberg Times:
A Marine reservist armed with a tire iron beat and chased a man he thought was an Arab terrorist and even called 911 to say he was detaining the man, police said.
But the man he assaulted was actually a Greek Orthodox priest visiting from overseas who spoke limited English, police said.
…
Instead of offering help, Bruce struck the priest on the head with a tire iron, police said.

God save us all.
“Is this where we will be heading?”
We need to be careful in using this one incident as a broad brush to paint a backlash story.
Just as Maj. Hasan does not define all Muslims.
If you’re asking if we are heading toward becoming a nation of bodybuilding, testosterone- and HGH-taking Marine reservists with a history of physical assault who are approached by foreign men in robes and sandals, the answer is no.
This is what happened to Seiks after 911. I’m not at all surprised.
This is kind of an odd case to use as an example of an anti-Muslim backlash. The fact that the perpetrator called 911 and reported that he was pursuing a terrorist would seem to indicate that this was not someone who was committing random violence against Muslims. It is disturbing that someone can be so out of touch with reality that he thinks a man in unusual garb is a terrorist, but this looks more like an isolated case of an emotionally disturbed individual freaking out than of an anti-Muslim backlash.
dpt makes an excellent point above.
The priest-beater is now using the ‘gay panic’ defense.
