Olympics
Some people seem to think that the president is taking time away from more important things to go to Copenhagen to lobby for Chicago to get the 2016 games. They’re wrong. He is taking time away from more important things to go get the credit for bringing the Olympics to Chicago. Does anyone seriously believe that the president would take a quick trip to Copenhagen with the possibility of coming back empty-handed? If the president is going, it’s because he knows that Chicago has already won. He’s going.
May his cynicism be proved true. Even though all the evidence suggests hosting the Olympics is a big loser, I’m still hopeful that the city of Chicago gets the Olympics. Much of the Midwest will be highlighted in the various games. A ski hill not far from my hotel may end up hosting some cycling events.

I’m glad to hear the final plan includes more activities outside of Chicago. When the plans were first mooted, it seemed that South Bend was the only place that would get any of the sports besides the Chicago metropolitan area. That said, I’m unconvinced of the benefits for the city itself. A giant temporary stadium isn’t what Washington Park needs, although it certainly needs something.
From what I’ve read, Milwaukee will get a number of events. Madison is getting some cycling events I believe.
Actually, his original message said nothing about Obama’s political skills. It said Obama already knew the outcome and was just going to Copenhagen to claim the credit. So he was wrong in his cynicism about Obama’s motives for the trip, but of course he can’t bring himself to admit that, so he has to to twist his admission to make it another swipe at Obama.
Im not making this up. A conservative group called “Americans for Prosperity” was holding a conference when it was announced the USA had lost the bid and they burst out cheering.
