Patrick Madrid on Waterboarding
September 7, 2009
As one who is often concerned about how the right-wing of the Church in America fudges on torture, I was delighted to find one of their heros saying this:

Of course he’s being attacked on his own blog for it and, believe it or not, the sun rose in the east this morning.
Brett Salkeld is a doctoral student in theology at Regis College in Toronto. He is a father of two (so far) and husband of one.

I always like the “but war requires evil” arguments (as was posted on his blog). People never figure out what that might say about war.
Wow, this literally made my day. We need more people like Patrick Madrid and Mark Shea who, whether they are commonly identified as belonging to the left or the right, are not ashamed to defend the Church’s affirmation of the dignity of EVERY human being, be it an unborn child or an accused terrorist.
Henry,
Indeed, it is sad to see how close they get to seeing the problems with war before making a quick U-turn and suggesting that, in the end, the Church can’t really mean what it says when it condemns torture. Did you see the guy who said that once you call something an absolute evil, you are in a basically unworkable position? I wonder what that guy thinks of Church teaching on contraception. He’s forced himself into almost the identical arguments that dissenters on that question are famous for.
Mickey,
I’m glad.
Good for him.
