“My own heart let me have more pity on; let…”
MY own heart let me have more have pity on; let
Me live to my sad self hereafter kind,
Charitable; not live this tormented mind
With this tormented mind tormenting yet.
I cast for comfort I can no more get
By groping round my comfortless, than blind
Eyes in their dark can day or thirst can find
Thirst ’s all-in-all in all a world of wet.
Soul, self; come, poor Jackself, I do advise
You, jaded, let be; call off thoughts awhile
Elsewhere; leave comfort root-room; let joy size
At God knows when to God knows what; whose smile
’s not wrung, see you; unforeseen times rather—as skies
Betweenpie mountains—lights a lovely mile.

Thank you, Mark. Wonderful words indeed.
Matt,
I have to return to words like these often for guidance in my own personal life. I hope they can be of help to others in similar circumstances.
Thank you. It speaks to my heart.
Janet,
You are welcome.
I love Toronto.
It’s interesting how posts such as these, more personal and spiritual than public and controversial, get so little comment as compared to the usual ones.
Of course this is a blog more or less focused on the public and the controversial, but I would like to think there is a way to bring the deepest truths of our religion (and not merely dogma and ideology) more directly to bear on the big issues so that perhaps we could find more commonality and less polarization.
I do believe there is a genuine deep unity among most Catholics (left, right, and whatever), probably including most other Christians too, centered of course on Jesus Christ–and that a big part of our task in following Christ is to find and build upon that unity. But we do like to fight and stand up for ourselves! We need to mostly get over that.
God, I needed this so much today. Thank you.
David Raber,
I think about what you say every day. It is very difficult to get much traffic, let alone responses, to posts such as these, and this saddens me, as I think they can help build on the deeper unity and truths that all too often get lost in the political fray.
RCM,
You are welcome,. You are in my prayers.
