Paul Robeson was one of the artistic giants of the 20th century. Among his many accomplishments, he was the first major concert hall star to introduce the African-American spiritual to U.S. and world audiences.

Sorry to pull rank [I;m not really but you already knew that] but I remember him singing WHAT IS AMERICA TO ME? and I THOUGHT I SAW JOE HILL LAST NIGHT.
A further note: it is sad that he sang it with changed words. The original reads “Nobody knows but Jesus”.
It may surprise no one, but on my I-Pod I have Robeson’s songs against Spanish Fascism.
