Some Good News For the Year of the Priest

June 19, 2009

I don’t know what the significance of this is, though I thought it was good to hear just as we are starting the Year of the Priests: When I was at the Newman Bookstore near the CUA campus, I was told that this year they unexpectedly sold out of their “ordination cards.” It was the first for a long time. They usually have left-overs at the end of every year, but this year, they sold out quickly, and they only got their new order of cards in this morning.

Now this could mean one of two things. Either this is an extraordinary year for ordinations (which should lead us to ask why) or it is the start of a new trend. Hopefully it is the second.

Let us pray for all the new priests that they remain faithful to their service to the Lord.

Let’s also pray for the strength of resolution and perseverance to be instill and maintained in such men, less they end up becoming merely another Fr. Cutie in the offing, ultimately surrdering themselves in the end to the throes of Henrican Schism or even certain outright heresy.

God bless and protect such people whose vocations become especially rare these days, as our own culture would make them seem especially given modernity’s priorities and exceptional esteem for only the worldly.

    Henry,
Good news indeed, and I think you’re actually observing a trend. I’m on faculty at a major seminary and we are anticipating a college enrollment next year of around 20 men from our own archdiocese. Tallying up applicants from all other (arch)dioceses and we’re expecting to be near capacity, and, again, that’s just for the college, not the Theologate! A seminary bursting at the seams is good news for all.

A big thanks to all the wonderful priests who are making a difference in people’s lives everyday.

I have put up a tribute to the priests who have made a difference in my life at my blog:
