She’s A Girl!

October 18, 2008

Congrats to the Catholic Anarchist and his wife on their brand new baby girl who decided to be born today!  May you all get plenty of sleep!

Any good (non-political) advice you have for the new parents?  I would just say hold her and enjoy her because she won’t stay a baby for long even though in the moment it feels like eternity when you are soooo tired.

    Congratulations!

Maybe she can have dual citizenship granted to her…:)

It’s amazing how quickly the human body learns to survive on sleeping in 2-3 hour intervals. ;-)

    Congrats!!!

(Q: What happens if she rebels against her parents and becomes a Catholic monarchist? ;-)

Love her by loving Jesus. Love Jesus by loving each other. Love Jesus by loving the unlovable, even those in the midst of tantrums. It’s worked for our four daughters. Blessings to you!

    Mark – Yep she’ll be a dual citizen. :)

    Thanks, all.

As far as advice: Elmo is not as bad as you’ve heard; The Teletubbies are much, much worse than you’ve heard.

Boobah makes Teletubbies look like Masterpiece Theatre.

The teletubbies ought to be shot. There’s so much crap for kids. The Disney Channel, eg, must be blocked. Unless of course you like to buy useless sh*t. Marketing to kids makes drug dealers seem benevolent. We have U-verse with the huge DVR storage – we never watch commercial, maybe that will spare us. Of course there are all the brainwashed children of other people…Not to mention high school and such – it sounds downright scary with its hierarchies and what not. Back in Austria, there was no organized sports in high school, no ‘formal’ cliques, no meals in school. Plus, it was pretty much the same group of us for 8 years (4 years of elementary are followed by 8 in “Gymnasium”, except for kids with bad grades, they go to a lower type school).

Aw, Gerald if you hate u.s high school so much, why don’t you just move back to Austria?!

    J/K.

We’re considering homeschooling. A theology prof of mine is an unschooler. Also it’s not likely that we’ll have cable. We do without now, and we can’t imagine wanting to get it anytime soon.

Child marketing is a snapshot of capitalism at its worst. Well, seen from another way, it’s actually quite touching. Kids making toys and clothes for other kids halfway across the globe that they don’t even know! How sweet!

So we agree on something!! Actually both of those things (lack of cable, and the reason therefor).

    -We’re considering homeschooling. -

If you can do it, do it. I was a teacher for ten years. I did a lot of good, but I always felt that any parent with a modicum of education could teach the child far more, in less time, than I could while handling dozens of others simultaneously. Also, family teaches the real “socialization” that we hear is so important in a school setting.

Also, Boobah is like taking acid without all that ‘pharmaceutical baggage’. It terrifies me.

That’s what Netflix is for, Gerald.

Certainly some kinds of socialization are learned in the family, but there are other forms we’re interested in as well.

Regarding television, I got rid of mine when I realized how bad the marketing was and how much was geared towards my daughter and also, just the amount of trash my daughter was being exposed to. Now we Netflix it and that means we watch just a couple hours a week and mostly when kiddo is in bed.

Congatulations young man. I pray that your vocation is lived out in faith, hope and love.

Advice: Pray the Rosary everyday with your girl. the Rosary, in its simplicity, humbles us before God. It allows us to share in the faith of the Blessed Mother, and increases our confidence in Christ.

In an age of haughty and proud intellectuals the Rosary may seem quaint and inefficaious. Hogwash. It is a perfect gift of love to the Mother of God.

    God bless you Michael Iafrate.

Here’s my take on TV published in a nice little Christian ethics journal.

Hi Brett – Thanks for the link. I receive that journal in the mail and I quite like it. Your opening line quoting Ned’s Atomic Dustbin has me hooked… That God Fodder record is fantastic. One of my favorites from that time period.
