Politics as Usual
August 9, 2008
Two classic clips from Yes, Prime Minister. If you have never seen the show, and you are into politics and political discussions, you should see it and Yes, Minister, its predecessor; the series presents the best deconstruction of politics that you will probably ever see.

“Neville Chamberlain was very keen on peace!” These clips are priceless. Thank-you.

Save for the first couple episodes where the show is geting started, this is one of the most consistent comedies that I know; and the dialogue you see in here is typical of the show itself. It is indeed priceless.
Here are a couple more clips:

This is wonderful!! Thanks.

You are welcome as well. I thought people would appreciate these clips. I thought about having many of them on the post, but figured out people could find the rest — or watch the series (which is preferable, if they can).
The only one “Yes, Minister” clip which doesn’t work – is when they read from a Maggie Thatcher script (specially prepared, of course). It could have been worse, and they did a good job with it — but, it was just for fun, so it is understandable.
Had to be watched (or read – the books are just as good) back in the day for full effect, but it’s still superb now. Almost shockingly accurate.
By the way, the episode where Hacker has to approve a new Archbishop of Canterbury is priceless. You can’t appoint so-and-so – he’s an idealist. What’s wrong with that? He actually believes in God. Or something like that, the exchange went.
Also, check out the British made for TV movie, A Very British Coup.
Saul,
Back in the early 90s, I got a copy of the Complete Yes Minister (the book), and I agree; it was well done. I was able to get the complete DVD series of both last year (used, so for a real good price).
And I think the show will be timeless — of the kind that it will be looked at and examined in academia centuries from now.
