You heard from Jindal

July 24, 2008

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal told reporters that he will not be John McCain’s running mate.  From CNN:

“I’m not going to be the vice presidential nominee or vice president,” Jindal told Fox News. “I’m going to help Sen. McCain get elected as governor of Louisiana.”

“Let me be clear: I have said in every private and public conversation, I’ve got the job that I want,” Jindal said.

It’s not uncommon for those being considered for a slot on the presidential ticket to deny interest in the position, but Jindal’s blanket statement is notable, especially in light of the fact that he is widely considered to be on McCain’s shortlist.

    Good. He’s needed in Louisiana.

It’s funny how the line, “I’m going to help Sen. McCain get elected as governor of Louisiana,” could go two ways. Predictions? ;)

McCain’s running mate is not a job that too many people want right now, especially a rising star.

    Good point.

I talked to Jindal a few days ago when he was in my town. He was saying this line and refining it it during the day He of course will give this answer if asked in town hall meetings.

However if one looks at it from a politcal lens why would he want it. I mean lets say McCain won? What are the cances that Republcians could keep the White House for 12 straight years? I think not likely so Jindal even if McCain decided not to run would be hampered in 2012. He is much better 2012 hopeful if McCain loses or a 2016 hopeful if McCain wins in the long term

However if asked and it is put as demand that he serve his country will he flat out refuse it? I don’t know

He is incredibly young so there is no rush.

Also note under the Louisiana Const if Jindal became VP the LT Governor would become GOvernor. THere would be no new election. I think that weights heavy on him and the GOP since the LT Governor is Democrat Senator Mary Landrieus brother. One reason Nagin was elected again in New Orelans was that Republicans wanted to kill the Lnadrieu machine so they voted against Mitch.

I think that is a factor too

Why is Jindal needed in Lousiana? He sounds likely a run-of-the-mill Republican on all of the issues.

Jindal is needed because he is a much needed reformer. We are hoping that his legislative agenda will stop the decline down here. There are positive signs coming from his first legilstive sessions as to ethics reforms and Ecnomic development.

You say that like it’s a bad thing.

Have any of you seen the news reports of how Austrians lock people in basements and rape them? I still fear to go to Austria.

Gerald there is no need to fear us South of the Mason Dixon line. We are a diverse culture down here and it would be good if you would perhaps expand your horizons

Jindal is very highly thought of by conservative intellectuals and political leaders and for obvious reasons. He is a very intelligent and talented man. However, in polls and focus groups, the Republicans have found that he does not do well with the Party rank and file. McCain has a Republican base which needs shoring up and as happy as Jindal makes the leadership, he just doesn’t deliver beyond them.

  18. July 24, 2008 3:50 pm

Kurt, that is why I don’t think Jindal is a realistic presidential candidate. His best chance is to be VP first but that means he needs a viable presidential candidate to run with, not McCain.

Tim, it doesn’t take a lot of smarts to run a Catholic blog aggregator. You just have to know how to cut and paste and craft links.
