Although it is a popular rather than a scholarly book (there is of course a vast academic literature dealing with such matters), try reading a little volume entitled "Chosen People: The Big Idea That Moves Britain and America" by the editor of the UK newspaper The Catholic Herald, Clifford Longley, which looks at these bizarre "elect nation ideas" over time (although he unfortuantely leaves out Scotland and the Ulster-Scots from his treatment, which would be very useful in understanding the US).

Also, although the man is a bit of a reactionary in a number of senses, try a fascinating yet odd book by the Brisitsh historian J.C.D. Clark (now at the University of Kansas), entitled The Language of Liberty 1660-1832: Political Discourse & Social Dynamics in the Anglo-American World. It certainly offers an alternative angle.

Christian Zionism is one manifestation of a semi-occult method of handling scripture mixed together with a theory about human activities hastening the end. Hence the Christian Zionist desire to see a new temple built and an apocalyptic war fought between Judaism-Christianity and Islam.

It is no surprise that Christian Zionism has its roots in the UK and the USA. So your meditation for the fourth of July is timely and interesting.

I wonder when Christian Zionists will finally realise that the Kingdom of God and the covenant promises of God find all of their fulfilment in Christ rather than in some revived nation of Israel?

Just as a side note: I've read, and continue to read, many books of "occult lore" because of their connection to the history and philosophy of science (the connections between the occult and science are amazing). However, no book has disturbed me as much as Dee's Five Books of Mystery. I've not been able to read through it all. I know Edward Kelley, through whom much of the text comes from, is supposed to be some sort of charlatan. Nonetheless, there is something diabolical with this text. I just can't read far in it without being creeped out -- and I've read things which would creep out many people (Gnostic magical texts, for example). There is something rotten here. Very rotten.
