New papal encyclical is imminent
We’ve been anticipating this one for awhile, but it bears repeating that Pope Benedict XVI’s next encyclical, Caritas in Veritate, is likely to be out this fall. The Vatican’s Secretary of State, Tarcisio Cardinal Bertone, suggests that the Pope will not merely reiterate Catholic social teaching, but expand it to include Catholic reaction to globalization, environmentalism, the global food crisis, and climate change.
Apparently, Pope Benedict XVI is in close consultation with Renato Cardinal Martino and Bishop Giampaolo Crepaldi of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, who are assisting the Pope with the writing.
Amazon.com lists September 30 as the publication date of the new encyclical by Ignatius Press. It is currently available for pre-order.
Il Giornale’s Andrea Tornielli reported last week that the committee working with the Pope on the encyclical includes the Pope’s recently-named successor as archbishop of Munich and Freising, Reinhard Marx, a specialist in Catholic social teaching…

I wonder if the Novak-Neuhaus-Weigel triumvirate will alter this encyclical too.
Hey, maybe we should actually wait until the encyclical is out and people respond to it before speculating what other Catholic will say. Or is it just too hard to be charitable towards certain fellow Catholics?

I don’t know if it is a matter of being uncharitable, but a matter of anticipating a clash of ideologies.

Yep, or some other loons uncover a justification for abortion buried within the text.

In his encyclical, the cardinal said, “[Pope Benedict] does not want to repeat obvious truths of Catholic social teaching,” but will apply Church teachings to contemporary problems.
Or not so obvious, judging from some of the comments we get around here… and the completely whacked interpretations of the Church’s social teaching we get from EWTN and the like.

I’m not sure anyone pays attention to Populorum Progressio. Just like no one pays attention to Veterrum Sapientia. Just like you ignore St Pius X’s prohibition against your profane geetar during Mass.
I love Populorum Progressio!!…as well as Evangelii Nuntiandi. Paul VI had great stuff! I hope it’s going to be along those lines.

Michael, do you even watch EWTN or do you just listen to the garbage and lies people spread about it online? If you really believe all of that, you really don’t have any room to criticize anyone. Any nun who stands up to Cardinal Mahoney even to the point of almost being denied the sacraments has something going for her. I attend Mass in his diocese. We need A LOT more nuns like Mother Angelica.
