No Longer Wolves

“We say that it is time for civilization to draw inspiration from a concept other than that of strife, of violence, of war, of oppression, to set the world on the way to true justice for all. We say that Peace is not cowardice, is not faint-hearted weakness. Peace must gradually, immediately if possible, substitute moral strength for brute force; it must substitute reason, speech and moral greatness for the fatal, and too often fallacious efficacy of arms, of violent means, and of material and economic power. Peace is Man, who has ceased to be a wolf to his fellow man, Man in his invincible moral power. This it is that must today prevail in the world.”

- Pope Paul VI (World Day of Peace Message 1970)

Would anyone mind helping me locate an English translation of Paul’s UN address from ‘65? In the meantime, I should really work harder at becoming multilingual.

  2. Daniel H. Conway Says:

Paul the 6th, more than his predecessors, seemed to understand a dynamic by which Peace can come about. By which peace is to be understood. Not some bastardized peace through body counts and collateral damage.

    Peace through “invincible moral power.”

Amazing, huh? There’s a lot more too. Workin’ on it . . .

I don’t know of an English translation that exists for that speech Dustin. I’ve been able to work with in in Spanish when I’ve wanted to look at it. I spent about a half hour looking for an English version online, but I was unable to find a copy. The Vatican only seems to have it in French, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese.
