And Now For Something Not Completely Different…

March 25, 2008

For the fans of Hugh Laurie (or Stephen Fry).

Sadly, this is too true to life. But — things can improve. Let’s find ways to work together to improve the world. Let us reason together, and move beyond the exceptionism, racism, nationalism, calls for violence, and the like so often associated with the blogosphere!

Of course, reasoning together does not mean things will always be pleasant; criticism of injustices rarely ends up being pleasant. But we must find a way of dealing with them, and that means, we must become more aware of them in our locality. We must never let our pride for our country, for our community, get in the way. Rather, patriotism, properly understood, can only be served when one is willing to confront the dark sides of one’s community.

This also helps us understand subsidiarity better. Relying upon it while ignoring the problems facing the community will end up having many evils allowed in that community. And how can you face those problems if you see any criticism as an attack against one self?
