“Lombardi pointed out that Pope Benedict recently launched a permanent official dialogue with Muslim leaders.”

It is my hope that Bin Laden thinks this is actually a threat, and thus with this statement he is trying to rally his sympathizers against the Muslim leaders involved in this dialogue.

Bin Laden has also said that we intervened in Kosovo in order to murder Muslims, which is the exact opposite of the truth, so it’s not surprising he would lie about the Pope and the cartoons. Frankly, the Vatican’s response to the whole cartoon controversy (which suggested, as I recall, that the publication of the cartoons ought to have been criminalized and drew a false moral equivalence between publication of the cartoons and the violent response) was more than a little disappointing.

We would be well advised to pray for the technical failure of whatever he is planning.

What bothers me about the message is that Bin Laden is stretching the truth big time to make the Pope fit into the cartoon episode to which the Pope has no connection other than reproving it. And that could mean that whatever is possibly planned was in the works for years and now Bin Laden needs to rationalize the target which could be Vatican City and the rationalization doesn’t make sense but he needs to do it to get some rationalization behind it since most people have forgotten the Regensburg thing… or worse for Bin Laden…came to understand the mix up….. which could have been Bin Laden’s original motive but he realizes it is stale due to the time delay and due to understanding.

Let’s hope I’m totally incorrect. But he does these two to three year missions and in the case of the twin towers, he failed to communicate the motive which became then an after thought. Thus this time he is spelling out his motive prior rather than later even though I suspect it is not his original motive.
He is not a windbag. He does what he says and I for one will pray for a technical snafu that aborts the possible mission or seriously diminishes it.

This may be much more serious than some folks realize: I believe that, under Islamic Law, Bin Laden is REQUIRED to give some sort of “warning” before this kind of attack. I think that the Italian Government needs to vastly highten security at the Vatican.
