I understood Soutenus’ point about inhumane treatment as “animal cruelty,” which is unnecessary even when killing animals to eat.

:-) I meant “inhumane” . Please do not tell Mrs. Sypher, my grade school English teacher!! Can teachers still change your grade after you have graduated?
BTW I see nothing wrong with killing animals to eat either.

by “inhuman treatment” of the animals… did you mean “inhumane?” or did you mean to say we should treat them like humans. i was just confused. personally, i see nothing wrong with killing animals to eat…

also, i really love taco bell. i hope to hear that there is no utter moral dilemma in getting a burrito supreme every now and then! :-P

Interesting article. I find that sometimes I have a hankering for a Big Mac, I’ll go in and eat one, but almost immediately afterward, I’ll feel slightly ill, and the feeling will last for a couple of hours.

I think I’m just going to avoid fast food altogether (except Subway).

Nice article, too bad the teacher played the “but he will be left out” card. I gave up fast food and ground meat a few years ago after reading Fast Food nation (good book to read).

This year I have been trying to move closer to vegan, but the transition is hard when you are not a good cook and the world makes eating death so easy. It is kind of amazing when people start asking questions about my vegetarianism, there is are many misconceptions as to where our food comes from. When you tie into all of our gluttony with the problems of food & water security around the world, I think it makes the transition to conscientious eating (if not some version of vegetarianism) quite easy. There is a Jesuit priest named John Dear who has plenty to say about this and other topics.

This is a really good post, and thought-provoking: what does Catholic social teaching have to say on dietary issues, given the prevalence of this junk. One thing that really turned me off McDonalds was the documentary “Super Size Me”. I recommend it.
