Comedic Catholics
October 25, 2007
As many of you likely know, Steve Carell of The Office and Stephen Colbert of The Colbert Report are both practicing Catholics. By the way, be sure to check out Carell’s new movie, Dan in Real Life, which is as comical as it is dramatic. Along similar lines, I saw
BruceEvan Almighty a couple weekends ago, and I enjoyed it immensely. That also starred Steve Carell.Wow, I didn’t know that Carell was Catholic… that’s great. I really like him a lot.
MZ,
I’ve heard the same reviews about Evan Almighty by many Catholics… I dismissed it at first, but I may watch it when it comes out in DVD.
It got ripped to shreds by the critics, but I wonder if that should not be motivation itself to go check it out.
Not very Catholic. They’re relativizing Christ through “humor.”
I’ve heard that Colbert teaches CCD to children. I don’t know whether that’s true or not. In any case, it doesn’t compensate for lampooning His incarnation and unique claims, thereby reinforcing the anti-Christian prejudices of his young television audience.
It’s not all a big joke. A joke is not self-justifying.
