    That is truly horrifying news.

I was not aware that people were so very hungry in Zimbabwe. If resources are so scarce, it is an unfortunate necessity that food must be given to people before it is given to animals.

I have to say that I disagree with the overall tone of the article though. There is no sin in eating the family dog if you are starving. The sin would be in continuing to feed the dog when your children were hungry.

    Ben,

Definitely. I didn’t like the tone of the article either. It’s like going back to the whole “dogs and babies” post that Policraticus wrote not too long ago.

It is nonsense to speak about cruelty to animals when people is starving. I think that it is not only meet-starving, but a full starving. And it is degradation of our white civilization to write about anything else but a help. We should collect tones of food that many times is thrown away in our “fat” country. We should protest stronger and stronger against Bush’s criminal war in Iraq that eats hundreds of billion. Finally, I shoul;d remind or just tell (those, who are not familiar with the history of the Soviet Union) that in blocaded Leningrad during WW2 when people were starving, they ate up not only cats and dogs, but mais and rats. And during the terrible famine in Ukraine in 1929-1933 were many cases that mothers ate their children.
Let’s make an appeal to the USA authorities to withdraw from military expenses some50-100 thousand to fit people of Zimbabwe and also to collect pet food to send for their pets.

Couldn’t have been put better, Victoria. You see, the problem is that we like to interprete moral views through our own cultural experience, so ofcourse ‘They eat pets’ becomes one more reason why Mugabe must burn in hell, meanwhile with correct introspection it becomes clearer that Zimbabwe is just a Western fixation (dare I say British) when you consider that there are outrages that cry out for heavenly vengeance occurring next door in Congo, yet I haven’t seen that situation mentioned on this blog.
